Lesson Planning

My lesson plan will consist about a specific math standard for second graders from Richmond Elementary school and some of the things I know about the students prior knowledge is that some of them have a better understanding of certain concepts and ideas because they have older siblings who have taught them some of the ideas the teacher has taught them. I also know that every student will learn things at different paces and at different levels which has been the case in the second grade classroom I volunteered. For the students that have a hard time grasping a concept, one of the things I have done is take them to the computer lab to work with them individually and I have used the mathabc website to help them reinforce or learn the different math concepts the teacher has taught them so far.
I would differentiate my math lesson by using podcasts in the classroom as a way to help me as a teacher evaluate each student individually and be able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the student as well as the areas each student needs help to improve. By integrating the multimedia tool of podcasts it will not only make it easier for the students to understand the material covered in class but it will also be a fun and different experience for the students. 

Web Tools

There are several ways in which I could integrate the different multimedia tools in my first or second grade classroom. One of the ways would be to integrate podcasts as a class activity such as assigning a class reading and then asking the students to create their own podcast with a summary of the main ideas that occurred in the reading as well as the key ideas. But first I would personally try out creating a podcast so that I have a good understanding because according to “Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms,” if I want to be able to help my students to the best of my ability I need to be able to understand the tool being used.

Another multimedia tool I would integrate in my classroom would be blogging, the way I would integrate it to make it fun and entertaining to my students would be to allow them to create their own blogs the way they want as long as it is appropriate for school and I would post their homework assignments as a blog post so that they would be able to do them at home. Not only would they have the access to their assignments but I would also put different types of links such as games or activities to help reinforce the material I would cover in class. Using a blog is a very fun, and easy way to teach and help the students learn or reinforce their keyboarding and writing skills.

Even though there are many ways and tools I could integrate in my classrooms, the ones I mentioned would only be some of the tools I would personally integrate and use in my classroom.

1. The brainpop website is a helpful website which includes different topics ranging from science, math, english to engineering in tech. It is a helpful site especially for elementary students in order to review or learn new math problems or learn more about science. Brainpop is supposed to teach the students new information about the different areas of science, math calculations, social sciences and many other areas, it is supposed to help the students gain a deeper understanding of a certain topic.

2. The standards (NETS-S or content) by using this site will help achieve will be teach the teachers to be able to use their knowledge about technology and be able to incorporate in their lessons in order to teach their students about the different ways they can review, or learn more about the topics being taught in the classroom. In general, help the teachers be able to incorporate technology in their classroom as well as teach their students the safe ways they can use technology.

3. Some of the things you need to know before using the site is that it is very helpful for any grade level because it provides quizzes in different areas such as science, as well as that anyone can use it to help them learn a new math solution or a science concept. Before using the site you also need to know that it not only focuses on one area but several which is very helpful for the teachers and students as well.

4. The strengths of the website is that it provides a high interest for the students because it provides different options to learn the material (areas, topics) in a certain area, it provides examples to help the students have a better understanding as well as quizzes to help the students test themselves on the material and be able to see the areas they still need to review, the technical quality is good and I believe it is bias free.

5. Some of the limitations of the site are that the reading level for certain students may be either to high or too low for them to be able to grasp the concepts presented, the site also does not provide clear instructions for the steps needed to take for each section.

6. Best guess on age group/grade level the site is intended for I believe is for elementary students specifically but it can also be used by middle or even high school students to review specific content in a certain area.

The goanimate website is a helpful way to engage students by using animated videos to teach a lesson or a topic needed to be learned in class, the goanimate website is a very helpful site for elementary school teachers because it will help them keep their students engaged especially the younger ones. Goanimate is supposed to be a way to teach the students different lessons while using entertaining animated videos in the classroom and help them have a better understanding of the concepts being taught while being entertained and having fun, a very helpful tool for the teachers as well as the students.

The standards (NETS-S or content) by using this site will help achieve will be teach the teachers to be able to use their knowledge about technology and be able to incorporate in their lessons in order to teach their students about the different ways they can review, or learn more about the topics being taught in the classroom. In general, help the teachers be able to incorporate technology in their classroom as well as teach their students the safe ways they can use technology.
  3. Some things you need to know before using the site is that it is free to create an account and that you can see anyone’s videos who have their account or videos public. It is easy to create interesting and entertaining videos for your classroom.
  4. The strengths of the website is that anyone can use it and that it is easy to use, it provides specific instructions about how to use the website as well as the steps you need to do to create your own video.
  5. Some of the limitations of the site are that there are only a limited set of options to make and create a video and sometimes the length of the video and anyone can use it.
  6. Best guess on age group/grade level the site is intended for I believe would be for elementary and middle school students but high school students can use it to create videos for a computer or technology class as well.

The fakebook website is a helpful way to engage students and the teachers to use something similar to Facebook but without using it, it has the similar features of Facebook, because teachers are able to create posts for study purposes only. Instead of using Facebook, they can use fakebook instead. Fakebook is supposed to be a helpful tool for the teachers to post information and friend all of their class but only for study purposes, it is a good way for the students to interact with their classmates and get a hold of their teacher as well, it also helps the students stay on top of their assignments and not stay behind.
  2. The standards (NETS-S or content) by using this site will help achieve will be to teach the teachers realize as well as the parents that there are several different ways to use technology in the classroom for study purposes. It will teach the teachers a different way to stay connected with their students but in a safe way and without having to use their private Facebook account to stay in contact with them. It will also let the teachers integrate technology in their classroom.
  3. Some things you need to know before using the site is that it is free to create an account, it has similar features as Facebook but without being dangerous for the students to use and that it is an easier way to stay connected with the students. You can also create a page just for your classroom so that you can post assignments, educational videos or powerpoint presentations. It is easy to create an account and easy to use.
  4. The strengths of the website is that anyone can use it and that it is easy to use, it provides specific instructions about how to use the website as well as the steps you need to do to create your own class website or profile in this case.
  5. Some of the limitations of the site are that there are only a certain set of options and features you can use but most of the features are just like Facebook, limited anyone can use it but not everyone can join your class profile.
  6. Best guess on age group/grade level the site is intended for I believe would be for middle school students and high school students too.

The four tests for fair use involves:
-The purpose of the use
-The nature of the work being copied
-The amount of the work being copied
-The effect of your use on the market of the work being copied

According to Educational Leadership, the type of media involved matters because in order to get permission for using an article, video or any form of media you need to follow a set of rules or steps and each step depends on the type of media being used. For instance, the steps for integrating video in the classroom is different than asking for permission to use a chapter in the textbook. The type of media also matters because each has restrictions on the amount of time a teacher or someone can use it as well as the reasons they would be able to use the material with or without permission. The type of media involved is important when it comes to obtaining permission so that nobody gets in trouble because they did not follow the copyright laws.

True or Not?

1. Can we define what it means to be information literate?

I believe that to be information literate means being able to evaluate the information based on the person who wrote it and see if there are any biases presented in the article as well as being able to determine if the information in the article is credible or not.

2. Can we teach our students to have the skills essential to information literacy?

Personally, I believe that we can teach our students the essential skills needed to information literacy so that they are able to determine when the information they found is credible or not, see if the information is also what they are looking for and if they truly need the information. By teaching them the basic skills on how to identify a credible source and a not credible source will truly help the students and will decrease the amount of not credible sources they use. But by teaching them the essential skills to information literacy will really benefit our students.

3. Can we truly prepare students to be effective users of the most powerful medium?

I believe that we can truly prepare our students to be effective users of the most powerful medium but I think that in order for us to be able to teach them we need to have the knowledge on the mediums we teach our students because if we do not know anything about the type of technology we are trying to teach to our students, we will not be able to prepare them to be effective users. To be able to truly prepare them to be effective users, I believe we need to be prepared ourselves in order to better be able to help them when necessary but I do believe it is possible to teach our students and truly prepare them to be effective users of the most powerful medium such as technology.

Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants

In recent discussions of youth also known as “digital natives” and adults or “digital immigrants” in regards of technology and the knowledge each group possesses, a controversial issue has been whether “digital natives” have more knowledge than adults or “digital immigrants” when it comes to the technological advances and whether or not the “digital immigrants” should begin to use technology in their lesson plans so that the youth have a better understanding of the material. On the one hand, some argue that the “digital immigrants” should not have to change or modify their lesson plans to meet the needs of the youth or “digital natives” because they should be able to learn without having to use technology methods. Since some of the adults specifically the teachers, may have little or no knowledge of many technological advances. From this perspective, there have been arguments for and against technology and whether or not the “digital natives” have a better understanding of technology since they grew up being surrounded by it and because many of the youth spend a good portion of their time on social media or on the internet in general. On the other hand, however, others argue that the “digital immigrants” or the adults should modify their plans because times have changed and now in society technology has become a great part of it. Plus the “digital immigrants” should be willing to learn about the new technological advances and not just expect their students to learn in any other way. According to this view, people are changing the way in which both “digital natives” and “digital immigrants” are seen. In sum then, the issue is whether “digital natives” are more knowledgeable than the “digital immigrants” or if the “digital immigrants” should change the way the teach their students.

My own view is that even though the youth have grown up in a society in which technology has had such a big influence, that they should not be thought as that they are very knowledgeable about technology because in some cases the youth might be but in other cases they might not. Though I concede that the adults or “digital immigrants” grew up in a time where technology was not as prominent, they should not believe that only because the majority of the students are on social media or the internet that they are very knowledgeable about the different technology advances, I still maintain that “digital natives” do know a bit more about technology than the “digital immigrants” but the “digital immigrants” are not that far behind in learning and knowing about technology as well. For example, some students or “digital natives” do not know how to distinguish a reliable source because the adults have not taught them the difference between a reliable source and a non-reliable source and also because adults have told their students that Wikipedia is not a reliable source but without giving any reasoning why that is. The youth/students or “digital natives” are knowledgeable about technology but only in certain areas, not in every area. Although some might object that the “digital natives” know more than the “digital immigrants”, I would reply that it just depends on the opinion, views and personal experiences of every person. The issue is important because we learn about the “digital natives” and the “digital immigrants” and if in reality the youth are more knowledgeable than the adults or “digital immigrants”.
